Environment, Forests and Climate Change and Water Resources Ministry’s Advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan said regional cooperation is absolutely needed to combat the effects of climate change. Upstream countries need to be informed in advance of rainfall, structure conditions and release times. Upstream and downstream countries need to work together. The Environment Advisor said all these while addressing the remarks of Chief Guest at the ‘Annual Community of Practice (COP) Network Convention 2024’ of the ‘Empowerment: Women for Climate Resilient Society (Phase 2)’ project organized by Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) Sunday (October 6) at BRAC Centre Inn, Mohakhali, Dhaka.
She also said that the government is taking measures to avoid food shortage due to natural disasters. At the international level, money should be brought from zero carbon emission, loss and damage fund. She pointed out that women are more affected due to climate change. She also assured to ensure the participation of women in the national plan of adaptation. Shaheen Anam, Executive Director of MJF, presided over the event. Maria Stridesman, Head of Development Cooperation of the Swedish Embassy in Bangladesh and Gitanjali Singh, Country Representative of UN Women spoke as special guests.
The ‘Women’s Climate Action Network’ was announced at the event and five women entrepreneurs were awarded the ‘Women’s Climate Action Medal, 2024’. Conference participants discussed strategies to increase women’s participation and leadership in climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts. The event featured various panel discussions, workshops and presentations on women empowerment, climate resilience and gender equality.
